The name was based on geography — Midi (southern France) and Pyrénées (the mountain range serving as the region’s southern boundary). From January 1st 2016, Midi Pyrénées merged into the new super-region now officially called Occitanie — a historical reference to the part of France where until the nineteenth century most people spoke varieties of Occitanian French.
Unlike many regions of France, Midi-Pyrénées is not a historic province but a 20th century creation, established to build a region around the great city of Toulouse. The modern region encompasses parts of the former provinces of Guyenne, Gascony, and Languedoc, along with smaller historic areas including Rouergue, Quercy, the Albigeois, and the county of Foix.
